Abia State is gearing up to host its first-ever international film festival at Confidence Hotel, Umuahia, an event that promises to place the state prominently on the global map.
Dr. Alex Elekwa, president and founder of the initiative, emphasized the urgency and significance of this development, stating, “Having an international film festival in Abia is long overdue.”
The festival is designed to attract filmmakers from around the globe, fostering a vibrant community and generating significant interest in the film industry in Abia State and beyond. The appeal for support extends to all levels, with a specific call for government empowerment to ensure the festival’s success.

Dr. Alex highlighted the multifaceted benefits of the festival, noting, “Abia is unveiling something that would put us on the map of the world.” He further elaborated on the major objectives of the festival, which is to train Abia youths in various areas in film production.
“We are lucky to have a governor who listens,” the president added, underscoring the supportive governance that has been pivotal in bringing this vision to life. Creating job opportunities remains a key aspect of the festival, aiming to provide a substantial boost to the local economy.
Mr. Hope Obioma Opara, ABIFF director, announced that the festival is open to volunteers from all local government areas in the state, encouraging widespread community involvement. The unveiling of the Abia International Festival logo, with the theme “Cultivating Abia’s Next Generation of Film Creatives,” marked a significant milestone in the preparations.
Incorporating cultural displays is a central feature of the festival, as Dr. Alex asserted, “We can’t remove culture from filmmaking.” He reiterated the need for continued government partnership to ensure the festival’s success.
The event, characterized by its focus on creatives rather than political affiliations, concluded with Mr. Wisdom Nwankwo thanking the press for their attendance and support.
