Abia Labour Party: Court Ruling Won’t Stop Nov 2 LG Election – Azubuike

Hon. Peter Azubuike, a Labour Party chieftain in Abia state, is confident that the November 2nd local government election will proceed as planned, despite a Federal High Court ruling in Abuja declaring Julius Abure the authentic national chairman of the party, ABN TV reports.

The court held that the convention of Labour Party held in Awka in March which produced Abure as the national chairman of the party was valid.

The court also ordered INEC to recognize Abure as the national chairman of the party.

This therefore invalidates a convention recently held in Umuahia Abia state in which a former Minister, Nenadi Usman was appointed the caretaker committee chairman of LP.

It therefore means that every action taken by the committee is now invalidated.

The committee had cleared candidates to contest for the next month’s local government election in Abia.

However, Hon. Azubuike, a former Labour Party House of Assembly candidate believes that the ruling is nothing to worry about.

He said the tenure of Abure as the national chairman has expired, which he said necessitated the setting up of the caretaker committee.

According to him, a political party is not built around one person and legality cannot be extracted from illegality, to the extent that Abure cannot continue to lead the party after his tenure has come to an end.

He also faulted what he called a premature convention in Awka which produced Abure again for a fresh term in office, saying such is an illegality that cannot stand.
