Abia Govt Tasks Residents On Environmental Sanitation

Abia State has announced plans to join the global community to commemorate World Clean-Up Day, observed internationally on September 20.

A statement by the General Manager/ Chief Executive Abia State Protection Agency, Ogbonnia Okereke, on Friday stated that the landmark occasion is a testament to the progressive strides made under the visionary leadership of the Governor, Abia State, Alex Otti, as the state embarks on a sustainable path toward environmental cleanliness and public health.

He pointed out that this year’s World Clean-Up Day theme aligns perfectly with Otti’s administration’s ongoing efforts to revolutionise waste management in Abia state.

The statement read, “The importance of a clean and healthy environment cannot be overstated, as it is key to the well-being of our citizens. Prior to this administration, the cities of Aba and Umuahia were notorious for being overrun by waste—an unsightly and dangerous situation that threatened the health of Ndi Abia.

“Recognizing the urgency of the waste crisis, Gov. Alex Otti swiftly declared a state of Emergency on Waste Management upon assuming office. A dedicated task force was immediately mobilized to tackle the backlog of waste that had accumulated over time. Within weeks, our major cities and towns were rid of the filth that once plagued them.

“Today, Abia State is not only cleaner but is also undergoing a complete transformation in its waste management system. The Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA) has been revamped and reenergized, ensuring consistent sanitation efforts across the state. Our commitment is to ensure that Abia transitions into a model state for modern and sustainable waste management practices.

“In celebration of World Clean-Up Day, we call on all Ndi Abia to actively participate in keeping our environment clean. Every citizen has a role to play in this collective mission. Let us all come together to build a cleaner, healthier, and more prosperous Abia State”.

The ASEPA boss urged members of the public to bag waste in biodegradable materials for proper disposal and avoid dumping waste in unauthorised locations or drains, which leads to flooding and environmental hazards.

He also advised Abia residents to pay sanitation fees promptly to support the vital public service provided by ASEPA, and embrace and support the state’s recycling initiatives as part of our shift to modern waste management.

He said, “ASEPA remains committed to quick and efficient waste evacuation from collection points, residences, businesses, and markets. Our goal is to maintain a healthy and clean Abia for all.

“As part of our modern waste management strategy, Abia State has embraced the United Nations Zero Waste Agenda and the Circular Economy Model, which seeks to convert waste into valuable resources such as consumer goods, fertilizers, and energy. We are moving beyond the traditional 3 Rs of Waste Management (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) and are now incorporating the 12 Rs, which include Refuse, Rethink, Repair, Refurbish, Remanufacture, Repurpose, and more. This comprehensive approach will ensure that waste is seen not as a problem but as an opportunity for innovation and economic growth.

“Under the guidance of Governor Alex Otti, Abia State is rapidly shedding its former image as one of Nigeria’s dirtiest states. Our administration is dedicated to positioning Abia as one of the cleanest states in the country, and we are confident that, with the continued collaboration of Ndi Abia, we will achieve this goal.”
