Abia Govt Secures Nsulu Community’s Support For Proposed Airport Project

The Abia State Government (ABSG) has successfully engaged with the people of Nsulu clan in Isialangwa North Local Government Area (LGA), securing their support for the proposed siting of an airport in their community.

This development comes after a protest by a section of the host communities in Nsulu against the project. The state government responded with a series of engagements to address concerns and clarify its intentions.

Speaking to the press after a crucial meeting with representatives of the host communities, the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Pastor Caleb Ajagba, stated that the protests were due to misinformation. According to him, the government had earlier consulted traditional rulers in the clan but decided to further involve the wider community to ensure clarity and inclusivity.

“There are people who may not understand the intentions of the government, which is why this engagement was initiated. By the end of these discussions, we believe the people will have a clearer understanding of the benefits of this project,” Pastor Ajagba explained.

He reassured that the government would continue its dialogue with all affected communities to address concerns amicably. He emphasized that the project is designed to bring development to the area without compromising the livelihood of the people.

Pastor Ajagba highlighted that tree clearing in preparation for the project is underway, and the government has plans to conduct enumeration and pay compensation to the affected community members.

“The Governor has demonstrated magnanimity in ensuring that every part of the state feels a sense of belonging. The economic benefits of this project are immense, and no right-thinking Nsulu person is opposed to the airport’s development,” he added.

Community representatives, including Dr. Jessy Odu and Mr. Kingsley Ukaegbu, voiced their support for the project, noting that only one of the eight host communities initially protested due to misinformation. They outlined the anticipated benefits of the airport, such as boosting economic activities and creating employment opportunities.

Dr. Odu stated, “This airport will open up our land for real economic activities and create jobs for our youths and others.”

The meeting also had the presence of the Airport Project Coordinator, Pastor Okorougo Aji, and other community leaders, reflecting a broad-based approach to ensure the project’s success.

The Abia State Government expressed optimism that the engagement process would lead to full community support, paving the way for the realization of the airport, which is expected to catalyze economic growth and development in the region.
