Abia Govt Bans Fireworks During Festive Season To Ensure Public Safety

The Abia State Government has imposed a ban on the use of fireworks, including knockouts, bangers, and other explosive materials, during the Christmas and New Year festivities.

This measure, aimed at safeguarding lives and property, was announced in a statement by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu.

The government explained that the decision was made to prevent criminal elements from exploiting the festive atmosphere to create panic or commit malicious acts. While traditionally associated with celebration, fireworks and other explosives have been identified as potential security risks during such high-traffic periods.

To ensure strict compliance, the government has tasked Mayors across the state’s 17 local government areas, alongside Traditional Rulers and Town Unions, with enforcing the directive. They are to collaborate with security agencies to maintain order within their respective communities.

Furthermore, the statement warned that anyone caught violating the ban would face severe legal consequences. Security agencies have been directed to oversee the enforcement process and ensure that all communities across the state remain secure throughout the festive season.

In urging residents to comply with the directive, the government emphasized the need for collective responsibility to maintain peace and security during the celebrations. “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” the statement quoted, referencing Benjamin Franklin’s famous words.

The Abia State Government called on all residents and visitors to cooperate with the authorities to ensure a joyous, harmonious, and safe yuletide season for everyone.
