The Senator representing Abia Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Senator Austin Akobundu, has officially resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Akobundu announced his resignation in a letter titled “Notice of Formal Resignation,” dated March 10, 2026, and addressed to the PDP Ward Chairman in Oloko Ward, Abia State. In the letter, the lawmaker stated that his decision takes immediate effect.
The senator expressed appreciation to the party for the opportunities given to him to serve both the party and the nation in various capacities during his time as a member of the PDP.
According to him, the decision to leave the party followed careful reflection and consultations with his associates and supporters.
He cited the prolonged internal crises within the party as a major reason for his resignation, describing the situation as “sad and seemingly intractable.”
Akobundu noted that the development made it necessary for him to take what he described as a “very painful but necessary decision” to resign from the party at this stage of Nigeria’s political evolution.
Despite his departure, the senator wished the PDP well in its future engagements and continued service to the nation.
The resignation of the Abia Central lawmaker is expected to generate fresh political discussions within Abia State and the wider political landscape as stakeholders await his next political move.
