The member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia federal constituency of Abia State, Rep. Sam Onuigbo has reacted to the Supreme Court ruling affirming him as the duly elected candidate of All Progressives Congress APC for Abia Central senatorial district, saying it is democracy at work.
While stating that the legal battle did not produce neither a victor nor a vanquished, he said the hard work put in place by members of National Assembly in producing the Electoral Act 2022 was not in vain, rather a piece of document that will strengthen the country’s democracy.
He said the victory and the fight were to let everyone know that they can believe in the systems, expressing hope that it motivates many young people out there.
“The Supreme Court judgment today, (Friday) re-affirming me as the validly elected and legitimate candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for Abia Central Senatorial District is a complete confirmation that democracy, when not impeded, remains the best form of government.
“As legislators, we worked so hard to get the Electoral Act 2022, passed. Yet, fears remained about Judicial interpretation of this critical piece of legislation which I was privileged to work hard with some legislators to bring on board. Today, the Supreme Court affirmed that legislators can work in tandem with them for the betterment of Nigeria, and I am relieved”, he stated.
He expressed gratitude to President Muhammadu Buhari for demonstrating commitment to leave a legacy of free and fair election by signing the 2022 Electoral Act into law.
He added, “This prolonged battle covering seven courts in eight months, for the ticket of Abia Central Senatorial District did not produce any individual victor or vanquished. It simply concretized our growth as a country. Nigeria is headed somewhere great and whatever I can do to advance this movement, I will always do.
“Abia Central needs a visionary. I believe I am a visionary. I hope you give me the chance to work calmly and steadily for our growth. Nothing else is my drive and focus in life.
“My sincerest appreciation to His Excellencies President Muhammadu Buhari GCFR and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo; His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, the Supreme Court Justices; All Progressives Congress (APC) generally; my legal team; my family; my supporters all over Abia; and most especially, the Almighty God. I must also thank my parents for showing me the value in being honest and selfless. Honesty does pay.”
