The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has emphasized that the construction of the Abia State airport will not only stimulate economic activities in the state but also improve connectivity and boost trade across the South East region.

In a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Levinus Nwabughiogu, Kalu commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Government for prioritizing infrastructural development in the South East. He acknowledged the Federal Government’s role in initiating the Abia Airport project, which is set to begin construction on Tuesday.

Kalu described the airport as a crucial step in bridging the infrastructure gap in the region, calling it a testament to the Federal Government’s commitment.

He highlighted his role in facilitating the project, noting that he had shared the idea with the Abia State Governor, who upgraded the initial airstrip concept to a full-fledged airport. Kalu praised the collaborative efforts between the state and federal governments, driven by elected representatives.

Although unable to attend the groundbreaking event due to the presentation of the 2025 national budget on the same day, Kalu assured Governor Alex Otti of his unwavering support for the project. He reiterated his dedication to attracting impactful, people-centered projects to Abia State in his capacity as Deputy Speaker of the national parliament.

Kalu expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for approving the airport project and establishing the South East Development Commission (SEDC), noting that these initiatives are pivotal for regional development.

“The Abia Airport project and the SEDC will contribute significantly to the President’s economic plans, addressing Nigeria’s economic challenges and infrastructure deficits,” Kalu stated.
