Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, representing Abia North Senatorial District, has expressed profound grief over the demise of Hon. Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga, Deputy Chief Whip of the House of Representatives.
The House of Representatives had earlier confirmed the passing of Hon. Onanuga, who represented the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency of Ogun State. She passed away on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, after a brief illness.
In a statement issued by the House Spokesman, Rep. Akin Rotimi, Hon. Onanuga was praised as a visionary leader, committed public servant, and steadfast advocate for her constituents.
Born on December 2, 1965, Hon. Onanuga was first elected to the House in 2019 under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). During the 9th Assembly, she chaired the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development, where she championed policies focused on women’s empowerment and social welfare. Re-elected in 2023, she became the Deputy Chief Whip in the 10th Assembly.
Describing her passing as “shocking and devastating,” Senator Kalu highlighted her significant contributions to governance and her unwavering advocacy for women’s participation in politics.
“The loss of Hon. Adewunmi Onanuga is a tremendous blow. She served her people with unwavering passion and dedication and will be deeply missed,” Senator Kalu said.
On behalf of the people of Abia North Senatorial District, Senator Kalu extended heartfelt condolences to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the family of Hon. Onanuga, and the people of Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency.
