Former member of the House of Representatives, Rep. Sir Sam Ifeanyichukwu Onuigbo, has officially declared his intention to contest for the Abia Central Senatorial seat under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Onuigbo made the declaration on Friday, March 20, 2026, at Odoziobodo Hills, Obuohia Obi Ibere in Ikwuano Local Government Area of Abia State, in the presence of party leaders, stakeholders, and supporters from across the senatorial district.
In his declaration speech, Onuigbo stressed that leadership is not about self-promotion or political noise-making, but about impacting lives and improving the well-being of the people.
“Leadership is about touching lives. It is not about noise-making or personal advertisement. Many people I have helped, I don’t even know them,” he said.
He recounted several personal interventions, including sponsoring the education of a young man from Olokoro who, after struggling through hardship, gained admission to study Computer Engineering at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, and was supported through graduation.
Onuigbo also highlighted his efforts in restoring academic programmes at the university when some courses were delisted, noting that his intervention helped revive confidence and investments in the institution.
The APC chieftain further outlined his contributions to community development, including:
- Expansion of classroom facilities in his community
- Facilitation of a secondary school through collaboration with the United States Ambassador
- Advocacy that led to the construction of a Federal Secretariat in Abia State
- Participation in erosion control projects across affected communities
He reiterated that his political journey, which began in 2010 as Special Adviser to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, has been marked by service and measurable impact. He also served as Commissioner for Lands and Survey, and later Commissioner for Finance in Abia State.
Onuigbo urged the people of Abia Central to carefully evaluate candidates based on track records, integrity, and performance rather than sentiments or inducements.
“Search very well who you want to make your leader. Keep your eyes open and do not be deceived. Leadership is about results and bringing change,” he stated.
He assured constituents of continued impactful leadership if elected, promising to remain accessible and committed to delivering quality representation.
Speaking at the event, the Abia State APC Chairman, Hon. Chijioke Chukwu, described Onuigbo’s declaration as significant and worthy of support, noting that the party leadership values his experience and contributions.
He urged APC members in Ikwuano and across Abia Central to unite and deliver strong support for the party, emphasizing the need for political alignment with the federal government.
Chukwu also used the opportunity to criticize the current administration in the state, alleging poor governance and urging party faithful to mobilize for change ahead of the 2027 elections.
Several stakeholders and political figures who spoke at the event expressed confidence in Onuigbo’s capacity to deliver effective representation.
Sir Gabriel Onyendilefu commended Onuigbo’s track record, describing him as a dependable leader with proven performance.
Hon. Tony Ifeanacho from Umuahia South noted that Onuigbo has been tested and trusted, urging him to remain steadfast and expand his reach across the senatorial district.
Hon. Okezie Ogbonna assured him of support, noting that his past performance in the House of Representatives stands as a strong foundation for higher responsibility.
Former Transition Committee Chairman of Ikwuano LGA, Hon. William Egwuatu, expressed optimism that Onuigbo’s ambition would succeed, describing his move from the lower to upper chamber as a natural progression.
Professor Ihendinuhu highlighted Onuigbo’s role in restoring academic programmes and improving access to education, describing him as an impactful and responsive leader.
Evangelist Abraham Osundu described Onuigbo as a “nation builder” and “jinx breaker,” praising his humility and consistency in service despite national recognition.
Onuigbo’s declaration is expected to significantly shape the political landscape of Abia Central Senatorial District, as stakeholders begin early alignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Observers believe his entry into the race introduces a strong mix of experience, grassroots connection, and policy exposure, positioning him as a key contender in the forthcoming senatorial contest.
