The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, has stated that any decision regarding his political future ahead of the 2027 general elections will not be based on public pressure or speculation, stressing that his political party remains supreme in determining his next political step.
Kalu made this known during a media chat with journalists in Abia State, where he reacted to growing calls and speculations urging him to contest the governorship of Abia State in 2027.
According to the Deputy Speaker, while he acknowledges that some people and constituents have called on him to aspire to the governorship, such decisions go beyond personal ambition or public agitation.
“Whether or not pressure comes from the people or my constituents, accepting to run for any office is beyond personal sentiments. My political party is supreme, and that is the truth,” Kalu said.
He explained that unlike legislative positions such as the House of Assembly, House of Representatives, or Senate, where representation is based on defined constituencies, the office of governor requires statewide acceptance and consensus.
“When it comes to governorship, it is not about a single constituency. A governor must be accepted across the entire state, not just by a federal constituency,” he noted.
The Deputy Speaker also addressed the intense scrutiny and criticism that often accompany political life, cautioning that those who are not prepared for misrepresentation, name-calling, and media speculation should not venture into politics.
“In politics, you will be called names, stories will be written about you, some true, some not. If you are not ready for that, then politics is not for you. These things do not define who you are,” he stated.
Kalu further dismissed persistent media speculation about his political intentions, saying that while narratives may continue to emerge, he remains focused on his responsibilities and guided by faith and party structure.
“God will keep writing my story. Some people will write what sells their newspapers, blogs etc, but that does not change the truth,” he added.
He concluded by reiterating that his political journey will continue to be guided by party discipline, service to the people, and adherence to due process, rather than pressure or public noise ahead of 2027.
