The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has started training its officers on how to handle electoral offenses before, during, and after the general elections in Nigeria in 2023.

IGP Usman Baba, the inspector general of police, said during the flag-off ceremony of the training over the weekend in Abuja that the training was required by the Nigeria Police Force in order to ensure peaceful, free, and fair general elections.

In order to ensure that the officers and members of the Nigeria Police Force were fully equipped for the general elections, the IGP stated that the training will be conducted throughout the six geopolitical zones of the nation and the FCT.

The IGP, who was represented by CP Stephen Olarewaju, Commissioner of Police with responsibility for training, stated: “We know that there are issues of insecurity across the country from the North to the South and the 2023 general election is quickly coming. Therefore, there is a need for the police officers who will be involved in the election campaign to receive proper training on how to handle election-related crises.

To prepare the officers and men of the Police for dealing with any issues that may occur during the election, the management of the Nigerian Police Force approved this workshop with assistance from WAN DIYOS limited.

The IGP urged the officers and participants in the election training to pay close attention to the lectures and use the material effectively because the public expects them to behave properly during the polls.

Professor Shehu Liberty, the head consultant for WAN DIYOS Limited, also spoke at the occasion and stated that the success of the elections in 2023 will be greatly influenced by the role played by Nigerian police personnel.
He said that since the police are in charge of internal security, it is expected that they will be well-prepared for the elections in order to prevent any potential violence or crises.
