200 Feared Dead As Herders Launch Coordinated Attack On Benue Communities

On Friday night, coordinated attacks by suspected terrorist herders targeted the Yelewata and Daudu communities in the Guma Local Government Area (LGA) of Benue State, resulting in a significant loss of life.

Preliminary reports indicate that approximately 200 individuals, including internally displaced persons (IDPs) and at least five soldiers, are feared dead.

These communities have been recurrent targets of such violence. In April 2023, gunmen attacked an IDP camp in Mgbam, Guma LGA, killing 28 people, including a pregnant woman. Additionally, in May 2023, armed herders killed six individuals, including three members of the Benue State Community Volunteer Guards, in Tse Gyer and Ayem communities within the same LGA. These incidents underscore the persistent insecurity faced by residents in the region.

The Benue State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has previously reported the displacement of over 40,000 persons due to such attacks, with many seeking refuge in camps located in Daudu, Gbajimba, and Agasha. Despite the establishment of these camps, the frequency and severity of attacks continue to pose significant challenges to the safety and well-being of the affected populations. 

Local authorities and humanitarian organizations are urging increased security measures and support for the displaced communities to prevent further loss of life and alleviate the ongoing humanitarian crisis.

This tragic event highlights the urgent need for comprehensive strategies to address the underlying causes of these attacks and to provide protection for vulnerable communities in Benue State.
