A campaign support group led by Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has started a statewide voter education program to raise awareness among citizens of the importance of exercising their civic duty in the 2027 general election campaign as it gets underway nationwide.
In a statement issued on Monday by the coalition’s president, Adesina Abubakar, the program was organized to prevent a likely voter apathy during the forthcoming general election, following the low turnout recorded in the last general election in the state.
Speaking at the sensitisation rally held in Ikare-Akoko, the headquarters of Akoko North-East Local Government Area of the state, on Sunday, the National President of the group, Adesina Abubakar, said the group was working to mobilise grassroots residents to come out en masse and cast their votes on election day.
According to him, the coalition was concerned about the low voter turnout recorded in the last election and was determined to encourage more eligible voters to participate in the electoral process.
He said, “Due to what we observed in the last election, we discovered that voter turnout in Ondo State was not encouraging. We had about 1.9 million registered voters, but only about 300,000 people voted.
“This time around, we want to educate and enlighten people about the forthcoming elections and encourage support for PBAT 2027.
“Our task is to inform the people of Ondo State about their voting rights and encourage them to participate in the electoral process and vote for the candidates of their choice. We are also giving the message that they should support Tinubu in 2027,” he said.
Abubakar explained that the group, the BTO Coalition Platform for PBAT 2027, was committed to the re-election of President Bola Tinubu, saying the president’s re-election was non-negotiable.
He said the group would ensure that President Tinubu secured more than one million votes in Ondo State in the 2027 presidential election.
Also speaking at the rally, the United Kingdom Coordinator of the coalition, Sam Adegbite, said the rally was designed to strengthen grassroots mobilization, sensitize voters, and create an avenue for political education.
Adegbite said the coalition was also highlighting what it described as the achievements of President Tinubu and the contributions of Tunji-Ojo to development in Ondo State.
“The reason why we are doing this is for people to be aware of the structure that Asiwaju Bola Tinubu is putting in place and, at the same time, through our own Interior Minister, what he has done and what he is still doing in Ondo State,” he said.
He stressed that the BTO Coalition for PBAT 2027 was not a one-off campaign initiative but a structured mobilization platform with a presence across Ondo State and other parts of Nigeria.
“The BTO Coalition Platform for PBAT 2027 is not just a one-time event. We have this structure existing within the entire Ondo State and not only Ondo State alone but across Nigeria. As you can see, I came from the UK because of this mobilization,” Adegbite stated.
