Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has paid glowing tribute to former civilian governors and military administrators who contributed to the political, economic and social development of the state since its creation in 1991.
Speaking in a statewide broadcast to mark Abia’s 35th anniversary on Thursday, August 27, 2026, Otti acknowledged the role of the late Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, who served as the first democratically elected Governor of Abia State.
He also recognised former governors Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, Chief Theodore Orji and Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu for what he described as their contributions to the socio-economic and political evolution of the state.
According to Otti, leadership is a continuous process and each administration, despite its imperfections, contributed something to the journey of the state.
“We owe them a debt of gratitude for their contribution to our development,” the Governor said.
Otti also remembered the military administrators who governed Abia during its formative years, including Air Vice Marshal Frank Ajobena, Brigadier General Chinyere Ike Nwosu, Commander Temi Ejoor, Colonel Moses Fasanya and Lieutenant Colonel Anthony Obi.
He said their leadership helped maintain peace, public order and social stability at a time when Abia was still developing its institutional identity.
The Governor noted that investments in infrastructure and administration during the early years played an important role in shaping the economic and social experiences of the young state.
“Like all of us, our past leaders may not have been perfect, but we must never lose sight of their efforts at building a political entity that answers to the aspirations of all who share in its heritage,” Otti stated.
He said the anniversary provided an opportunity for Abians to rise above partisan differences and acknowledge the contributions of those who served before the present administration.
The Governor further called for a renewed commitment to unity and shared responsibility, saying Abia’s future would depend on the ability of its people and leaders to build on the foundations laid over the past 35 years.
