The Osun State Police Command has warned individuals and groups against attempting to forcefully take over the affairs or premises of local government areas in the state.
The warning was contained in a statement issued on Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police (Election), Samuel Erale.
The command said it had received reports of plans by some individuals or groups to forcefully take control of local government areas despite the matter being before the court.
It warned that such actions would amount to self-help and a breach of the peace.
“No individual, political group, or association has the right to resort to self-help or the use of force to assume control of any Local Government Area or public institution while judicial proceedings are ongoing,” Ojelabi said.
The police urged all parties involved to exercise patience and allow the courts to determine the matter in accordance with the law.
It further warned that anyone who attempts to forcibly occupy or disrupt local government facilities would be arrested and prosecuted.
“Any attempt to forcibly occupy or disrupt Local Government facilities will be viewed as a serious breach of the peace and dealt with decisively in accordance with the law, including arrest and prosecution of persons found culpable,” the statement partly read.
The command called on parents, community and traditional leaders, political and youth leaders, as well as other stakeholders, to caution their supporters against actions capable of threatening the peace and security of the state.
Erale also congratulated Osun residents on what he described as the successful and peaceful conclusion of the recent governorship election and commended stakeholders for participating in the democratic process.
He urged residents to remain calm, respect the rule of law and allow the judicial process to run its course.
“The Police will continue to protect lives and property and maintain peace and public order throughout the State,” Ojelabi stated.
