Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa will battle for the UEFA Super Cup in Salzburg, Austria, on Wednesday, with Somali referee Omar Artan set to become the first non-European official to take charge of the prestigious fixture.
The annual encounter pits the reigning Champions League winners against the Europa League champions, with PSG seeking to become only the second team in the modern era to successfully defend the title after Real Madrid achieved the feat in 2016 and 2017.
PSG defeated Tottenham Hotspur on penalties in last year’s final.
However, Artan’s appointment has added another layer of interest to Wednesday’s game after the 34-year-old was prevented from officiating at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States.
Artan was among the officials selected for the tournament but was barred from entering the US days before the competition began. US officials cited vetting and national security concerns, including alleged links to terrorist organisations, although no evidence was publicly provided.
UEFA subsequently selected Artan to referee the Super Cup, a decision that has been widely welcomed within the football community.
The appointment comes after Artan was recognised as Africa’s leading referee last season. He also officiated the 2025 African Champions League final.
Reflecting on the difficult period surrounding his World Cup exclusion, Artan said the experience had been challenging but expressed gratitude for the support he received.
“A lot of people have sympathy for me because when someone has been working a lot of years and is supposed to do something, and then can’t do it, it’s very challenging,” he told UEFA.
“I really appreciate the support I received throughout the world, though. I’m so grateful.”
Artan said he had been studying both teams extensively ahead of his first assignment in European football.
“The standard in Europe is fantastic and the football they play is very, very good,” he said.
PSG’s preparations have been influenced by the late return of several of their players who featured prominently at the 2026 World Cup.
Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembélé returned to training on Monday alongside France teammates Désiré Doué and Bradley Barcola. Spain midfielder Fabián Ruiz has also resumed training after helping his country win the World Cup.
