The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, has urged officers, soldiers, civilian staff, veterans, and their families to remain steadfast in their commitment to defending Nigeria.

Shaibu made the call in a goodwill message to the Nigerian army family during the Juma’at prayers held on Friday as part of activities marking the Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL) 2026.

He described the anniversary as an opportunity to thank God, reflect on the army’s journey, celebrate its achievements, honor fallen heroes, and renew commitment to the defense of the nation.

According to him, the Nigerian army has remained a symbol of patriotism, resilience, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to national service for 163 years.

He also said that the army had continued to adapt to emerging security challenges while remaining focused on its constitutional responsibility of defending the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The COAS noted that the 2026 NADCEL theme, “Protecting the Nation and Serving the People: A Way Forward for the Nigerian Army”, underscored the army’s commitment to the safety, prosperity and trust of Nigerians.

“Our troops remain actively engaged in operations aimed at combating terrorism, insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, oil theft, and other criminal activities threatening the peace and stability of our nation.

“In spite of the complexity of these security challenges, the Nigerian army has continued to record notable achievements across the various theaters of operation,” he said.

He commended officers and soldiers for their loyalty, discipline, courage, and professionalism, saying their efforts had led to the neutralization of criminal elements, dismantling of terrorist enclaves, rescue of hostages, and restoration of peace in several communities.

He reiterated that his command philosophy remained focused on transforming the Nigerian army into a more professional, adaptable, combat-ready, and resilient force capable of operating effectively within a joint and multi-agency environment.
