The University of Abuja (UniAbuja) on Thursday unveiled what is believed to be Nigeria’s first Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered academic research ecosystem dedicated to structured thesis, dissertation, and scholarly writing.
The platform, tagged ‘Thesis-SpeedWrite’, is designed to support ethical, structured, and disciplined research writing by guiding students, researchers, and academics through the various stages of scholarly work, from topic development and literature review to data analysis, citation management, and final manuscript preparation.
Developed by Professor Isaiah Ilo of the Department of Theatre Arts, the AI-powered ecosystem seeks to improve the quality of academic research while promoting originality, academic integrity, and adherence to global scholarly standards.
Speaking at the launch of the platform, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Hakeem Fawehinmi, acknowledged the widespread impact of Al on classrooms, libraries, laboratories, and the broader academic culture.
Prof. Fawehinmi said the emergence of AI has presented both opportunities and challenges for higher education institutions, stressing that universities must embrace innovation while safeguarding the core values of scholarship and academic integrity.
Represented by the Dean of Post-Graduate School, Prof. Kazeem Waziri, the V-C described Thesis-SpeedWrite as a timely intervention that aligns with the university’s commitment to excellence in teaching, learning, and research.
According to him, the platform is not designed to replace critical thinking or the role of supervisors but to serve as a responsible academic companion that helps researchers navigate the complexities of scholarly writing.
His words: “From what we have seen, the platform does not merely seek to generate academic tests, its deeper value lies in its attempt to guide students and researchers through its future academic process. It emphasises planning, logical development, literature engagement, methodological alignment, critical synthesis, and responsible academic writing.
“As a university committed to research excellence, innovation, and national development, we recognize the importance of tools that can help reduce the conviction many students experience in research writing.
“Anyone familiar with project supervision knows that many students do not struggle because they lack intelligence. Often they struggle because they lack structure. They are unsure of how to navigate from topic selection to problem statement, from literature review to methodology. A system that helps to verify this process, if used ethically and intelligently, can become a meaningful support for academic development”.
While noting that Artificial Intelligence is already transforming the way knowledge is created, shared, and consumed, the institution has the responsibility to ensure that these technologies are deployed ethically and productively to strengthen, rather than undermine, academic standards.
The Vice-Chancellor commended the developer of the platform, Prof. Ilo, for pioneering an innovation that has the potential to redefine research writing in Nigeria and beyond.
He expressed confidence that the ecosystem would assist students and researchers in producing high-quality academic work while reducing common challenges associated with thesis and dissertation writing.
In his keynote address, the Secretary, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) Gwa Mohammed, said having lost out in the First, Second and Third Industrial Revolutions, Africa has an opportunity to be at the centre stage of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
Mohammed underscored the importance of Al in driving the Fourth Industrial Revolution, highlighting Africa’s opportunity to lead in adopting and adapting Al technologies.
He stressed the need for ethical use of Al, transparency, and responsibility, noting the potential harm not used responsibly.
According to him, the human interface introduced by the platform enhances user experience by making the research process more intuitive, interactive, and accessible, while still maintaining academic rigour and adherence to scholarly standards.
He said: “I am excited seeing that there is a viewpoint for the lecturers or the supervisors from behind the scenes to also be able to see the level of decision that the students who are using this tool will be able to bring to the table, and this is very critical and it’s something that should be should be supported.
“Our universities must move from merely adapting to global technological change to participating actively in shaping it, we need homegrown academic technologies that understand our students, our supervision system, our research challenges, our infrastructural limitations, and our aspirations for global competitiveness.
“I am particularly encouraged that this platform has emerged from within the university and research community. This matters. Sustainable transformation in education is often strongest when scholars themselves identify the problems and participate in crafting the solutions”.
Earlier, the Founder of the platform, Prof. Isaiah Ilo, said it was developed in response to the global struggles faced by researchers and students in navigating the complexities of academic writing, as well as the growing need for a structured, ethical, and technology-driven approach to scholarly research.
He said unlike conventional AI tools that are often used for instant text generation, Thesis-SpeedWrite is built around a guided academic workflow, designed to help researchers move carefully from topic selection and project planning to literature organisation, guided reading, chapter development, drafting, revision, and defence preparation.
According to Professor Ilo, the platform was created to address long-standing problems in research writing and supervision, especially the confusion, inconsistency, weak methodological alignment, and poor literature handling that many undergraduate and postgraduate researchers experience.
“For many students, research writing has become frightening and overwhelming,” Professor Ilo stated. “What we are introducing is not merely another AI tool. It is a structured academic environment designed to simplify the research journey while preserving scholarly discipline and integrity.”
The platform grew out of years of close interaction with students and researchers who struggled with literature review development, source organisation, referencing consistency, chapter structure, analytical flow, and supervisor corrections.
He said: “The system simply provides structure where confusion previously existed. Recent evidence makes the intervention increasingly necessary. The 2025 students generating AI surveyed by the Higher Education Policy Institute and context reports that students’ use of AI tools rose dramatically from 66per cent in 2024 to 92per cent in 2025. This particular study was carried out in the UK. AI is no longer external to the university system, it is already deeply embedded within it”.
In their separate goodwill messages, the Head of Department, Theatre Arts, Prof. Awaritoma Agoma; the Chairman, Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), UniAbuja Chapter, Prof. Sylvanus Ugoh as well as Prof. Olympus Ejue of the Department of Theatre Arts, believe that structured AI-assisted research ecosystems may influence the future of postgraduate education across African universities, particularly in research methodology teaching, supervision support, literature synthesis, and scholarly productivity.
The Don agreed that Thesis-SpeedWrite would help reduce the tension between lecturers and students over AI use by shifting the conversation from unrestricted AI generation to guided academic workflows rooted in transparency, structure, and scholarly accountability.
They lauded Prof. Ilo for the initiative, describing it as a groundbreaking contribution to academic research and innovation that has the potential to transform scholarly writing, improve research quality, and position Nigerian universities at the forefront of responsible AI adoption in higher education.
