The Abia State Police Command has arrested two young men for alleged conspiracy, attempted child stealing, assault, and possession of suspected hard drugs following a disturbing incident in Olokoro, Umuahia South Local Government Area of Abia State.
The suspects, identified as Nzubechi Chinagorom, 24, and Chinonso Chibundu, 25, both residents of Olokoro, were apprehended by police officers in collaboration with the Olokoro Community Vigilante after an intelligence-led operation.
According to a press release issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chioma Chinaka, the incident occurred on May 25, 2026, when the suspects allegedly targeted the residence of one Miss Amarachi Chinyereugo, a 32-year-old nursing mother.
Police investigations revealed that Nzubechi Chinagorom allegedly attempted to forcibly take away the victim’s two-week-old baby girl from her residence. The attempt reportedly led to a violent struggle between the suspect and the mother.
During the confrontation, the suspect allegedly assaulted the nursing mother and stabbed her with a kitchen knife. The struggle also caused the infant to fall and hit her head, raising fears for the child’s safety.
The police further disclosed that while the attack was ongoing inside the residence, Chinonso Chibundu remained outside the premises, allegedly acting as a lookout to facilitate the operation.
Following the victim’s distress call and the intervention of concerned residents, the suspects fled the scene. However, acting swiftly on available intelligence, police operatives and members of the community vigilante tracked and apprehended the duo at a nearby bus stop.
According to the Command, the suspects were allegedly found consuming substances suspected to be hard drugs at the time of their arrest.
The injured mother and her baby were immediately rushed to a hospital for urgent medical attention. Authorities confirmed that both victims received treatment and have since recovered.
The police said exhibits connected to the case were recovered, while investigations conducted by the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) established sufficient grounds for prosecution.
The Command disclosed that the suspects are scheduled to be arraigned before the court on June 2, 2026.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police, CP Danladi Isa, reaffirmed the commitment of the Abia State Police Command to protecting lives and property and ensuring that criminal elements are brought to justice.
He urged residents to remain vigilant and continue partnering with the police by reporting suspicious activities and security concerns through the nearest police station or the Command’s emergency lines.
The Command reiterated that community cooperation remains critical to crime prevention and maintaining security across Abia State.
