The Abia State Police Command has recorded another breakthrough in its ongoing crackdown on criminal activities across the state with the arrest of two suspects linked to armed robbery, cultism, and vandalization of critical government infrastructure.
The Command disclosed this in a press release signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chioma Chinaka, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Danladi Isa.
According to the statement, operatives of the newly established Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), acting on actionable intelligence, apprehended one Michael Kalu, 21, from Afikpo North Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, but resident in Amuma Ohafia, Abia State.
The suspect is alleged to be involved in armed robbery and cult-related activities. Police recovered one English pistol and one locally made pistol from him during the operation.
In a related development, operatives attached to Osisioma Divisional Police Headquarters arrested one Obinna Chimezie, 23, of Borrowed Pit area, off Temple Gate along the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway, while allegedly vandalizing a gas pipeline supplying gas to Geometric Power.
The police said a toy gun was recovered from the suspect, while a tent reportedly used for drug-related activities around the area was destroyed during the operation.
The suspects are currently in police custody, while investigations have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further action. The Command stated that the suspects would be charged to court upon conclusion of investigations.
Reaffirming the commitment of the Command to safeguarding lives and property, CP Danladi Isa called on residents of the state to continue supporting the police with credible and timely information to aid crime prevention and prompt response.
The Command urged members of the public to report suspicious movements and criminal activities through the Command’s emergency lines.
The police also reiterated its security awareness slogan: “See Something, Say Something.”
