The First Abia State, South East Open Scrabble Championship will commence today at the Indoor Sports Hall, Umuahia Township Stadium with the arrival of the athletes from all five South East States.
The South East State Teams arrived yesterday with the officials including the South East Chairman, Scrabble Association of Nigeria and the Zonal Coordinator, National Sports Commission while the event will commence at one o’clock in the afternoon.
Interacting with our Sports Correspondent in Umuahia, the State Director of Sports, Comrade Obioma George, noted that the competition is aimed at developing the Scrabble game in the South East, as the State has dominated the game standings, adding that the interest of the State Government is centred on developing every sporting activity to be at the forefront and identified the championship as Apt.
Comrade George described Scrabble as a game for intellectuals, as well as students, stressing that they expect students to be part of the game which he said surveillance will be mounted for talent hunt and commended the State Governor, Dr Alex Otti and Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Sir Nwaobillor Ananaba for their keen interest in developing all sporting events in the State.
The Director of Sports pointed out that the Scrabble game will be developed to the standard of a shooting game, as the State Team recorded numerous medals in the just concluded National Para Games in Abuja and announced that the athletes identified from the State Team have dominated the Nigeria Shooting Federation.
He assured that the State will defeat other States of the Federation in Scrabble and prayed that the talents that would be discovered in the Championship will go places through the game.
