Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has reaffirmed strong legislative and political backing for the proposed creation of Anioma State, describing the move as a step toward equity, development, and administrative efficiency.
Akpabio made this known on Wednesday during the All Progressives Congress (APC) South-South Zonal Conference held in Asaba, Delta State.
He stated that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains committed to supporting the initiative, which has continued to gain traction within the National Assembly.
According to the Senate President, the proposed restructuring would see the creation of Anioma State with Asaba as its capital, while Warri would emerge as the capital of the restructured Delta State. He noted that Warri already possesses the necessary infrastructure, including an airport, seaport, government institutions, major oil company presence, and a stadium, making it suitable for the role.
Akpabio described the agitation for Anioma State as historically justified, stressing that it reflects long-standing demands rooted in fairness, balanced development, and improved governance.
He further revealed that the proposal, championed by Ned Nwoko, has remained a key legislative priority of the 10th Senate, adding that its eventual realization would deliver significant socio-economic and administrative benefits.
“Anioma State will be created, with Asaba as its capital. The Senate fully supports the initiative spearheaded by Senator Ned Nwoko,” Akpabio stated.
“This step will usher in a new era of development and shared prosperity for all constituent communities. With Asaba as Anioma State capital, Warri will be the capital of the new Delta.”
The Senate President also emphasized that the proposed state creation would enhance decentralisation and governance efficiency by splitting Delta State into two viable entities.
Governors from across the South-South region—including Delta, Edo, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Cross River States—alongside other political leaders and party stakeholders, were in attendance at the conference.
Akpabio concluded by calling for unity among stakeholders in the region, urging collective support for initiatives that promote development and inclusiveness.
