Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has tied his political comeback to the upcoming Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) election, describing grassroots support in the poll as vital to his 2027 presidential ambition.
Speaking at a campaign rally for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Obi made an emotional appeal to his supporters, urging them to rally behind the ADC in the local government election.
Addressing a cheering crowd, the former governor said the AMAC poll represents more than just a council contest — it is a symbolic first step in his wider national political movement.
“You see this coming election, support us in AMAC; it will help me. Your support in AMAC is critical to our journey. I am involved and contesting the coming election as number one. When I come back, you will see. I assure you,” Obi told supporters.
Since aligning with the ADC, Obi’s loyal base, particularly members of the Obidient Movement, has been advocating for the party to adopt him as its 2027 presidential flagbearer — a move that has stirred excitement and debate within opposition circles.
Reacting to the growing enthusiasm, ADC National Spokesperson Bolaji Abdullahi urged supporters to maintain decorum and avoid divisive comments, emphasising that party unity remains paramount as political realignments intensify ahead of the next general elections.
Obi, who has repeatedly affirmed his readiness to seek the presidency again, continues to insist that his leadership vision is built on accountability and service. He has also maintained his commitment to a single four-year term, should he win in 2027.
With the AMAC election fast approaching, political observers say the outcome will serve as an early litmus test for Obi’s renewed political influence and the growing reach of his grassroots-driven movement.
