Troops of the 13 Brigade Headquarters, Nigerian Army, Calabar, have arrested a suspected gun-runner and recovered 245 pump-action cartridges during an intelligence-led operation in Abi Local Government Area of Cross River State.
In a statement issued by Major Yemi Sokoya, Assistant Director of Army Public Relations at the Brigade, the operation was conducted by troops of 245 Battalion following credible intelligence reports on arms trafficking in the area.
“During the operation, troops successfully recovered 245 pump-action cartridges, which were meant for illicit distribution to facilitate criminal activities,” Major Sokoya stated.
He noted that the suspect and the recovered ammunition are currently in military custody, while preliminary investigations are ongoing to determine the source and intended recipients of the arms.
The statement reaffirmed the Brigade’s commitment to preventing the proliferation of small arms and ensuring peace and security across its operational areas.
Brigadier General P.O. Alimikhena, Commander of the 13 Brigade, described the operation as evidence of the Army’s intelligence-driven approach to internal security.
“This operation reflects our proactive strategy and determination to disrupt illicit arms supply networks that threaten peace and stability,” he said.
He added that the Army would continue working with sister security agencies and host communities to curb illegal arms circulation and safeguard the environment for socio-economic activities.
Brigadier General Alimikhena also commended the troops for their professionalism and swift response, which ensured the success of the operation.
