LAGOS — There was relief and astonishment yesterday in the Pipeline area of Aboru, Agbado Oke-Odo LCDA, Lagos State, as an 84-year-old man was dramatically rescued alive after falling into a 140-foot-deep well at 35A, Fadeyemi Street.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, which carried out the rescue operation, said preliminary findings point to a possible attempted suicide, as the well was properly secured and covered before the incident.
The Comptroller General of the agency, Mrs. Margaret Adeseye, confirmed the incident, explaining that a distress call was received at 10:09 a.m., and emergency responders from the Abesan Fire Station were immediately deployed to the scene, arriving at 10:20 a.m.
“The incident involved an 84-year-old male who reportedly fell into a well estimated to be about 140 feet deep. Initial observations suggest a suspected case of attempted suicide since the well was adequately protected,” Adeseye stated.
She added that the rescue crew successfully retrieved the victim, who was then handed over to his family for medical attention and care.
The Fire Service chief said investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
