A tragic incident has shaken the Rivers State Police Command as Inspector Victor Okus allegedly shot two of his colleagues during an altercation in Port Harcourt on Sunday, leaving one officer dead and another hospitalized.
The officers, all attached to the 17 Police Mobile Force (PMF) and on special duty at Intels, Onne, were said to have been on joint guard duty with military personnel at Next Cash and Carry Supermart, Trans-Amadi, when the shooting occurred.
Police spokesperson, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident, describing it as “sad and distressing.” She identified the deceased as Inspector Ibrahim Sani and the injured officer as Inspector Daniel Dauda.
According to preliminary investigations, Inspector Okus allegedly fired shots at his colleagues, striking them in the head and neck. The victims were rushed to Nopsam Hospital, where Inspector Sani was pronounced dead, while Inspector Dauda remains under medical care.
The suspect has since been arrested and is currently in custody. His weapon has been recovered as part of the ongoing investigation.
Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, has ordered a full-scale inquiry into the incident and assured the public that justice will be served. He emphasized that the handling of firearms requires utmost professionalism and care, urging officers to always prioritize safety while on duty.
“The suspect will face an Orderly Room Trial and be charged to court,” Iringe-Koko stated, adding that the command extends its condolences to the bereaved family and colleagues of the late Inspector Sani.
