The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced bold and far-reaching plans for the launch of a 2029 African Nations League, promising a historic continental tournament that will bring together all 54 African countries in a single, high-profile competition.
CAF President, Dr. Patrice Motsepe, revealed the vision while outlining a format designed to deliver blockbuster matchups and elevate the global profile of African football. According to him, the tournament will feature thrilling continental rivalries such as Kenya versus Tanzania, Ghana against Nigeria, Egypt facing Morocco, and Ivory Coast clashing with Cameroon.
Motsepe explained that the competition will be staged in one host country, ensuring a festival-like atmosphere where Africa’s top stars converge to compete for continental glory. He added that the tournament will be scheduled during the official FIFA international window, guaranteeing the availability of the best players from clubs around the world.
Under the proposed structure, the African Nations League will adopt a zonal-based format. Countries will first compete within their respective regional zones, with selected nations hosting zonal matches. For instance, Nigeria is expected to host all West African games during the initial phase.
The winners of each zone will then advance to a final stage, where a draw will determine the fixtures as the top teams battle for the ultimate continental prize.
If realized as planned, the 2029 African Nations League is expected to mark a new era for African football, enhancing competition, boosting regional rivalries, and creating a global showcase for the continent’s finest talent.
