The National Emergency Management Agency on Monday distributed relief materials to victims of windstorm and flood disasters in six Local Government Areas of Sokoto State as part of the Federal Government’s humanitarian intervention.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Tuesday on NEMA Sokoto Facebook page, stating that the distribution took place at the Government House, Sokoto.
The intervention follows reports of extensive damage to homes, farmlands, and livelihoods in the affected communities.
According to the agency, the relief items, which include food, non-food items, and building materials, are intended to provide immediate support and stabilise living conditions for affected residents.
Speaking on behalf of the Director-General of NEMA, the Head of Operations, NEMA Sokoto Operations Office, Aliyu Kafindangi, said the exercise demonstrates the Federal Government’s commitment to alleviating the suffering of victims.
“These disasters destroyed homes, farmlands, and livelihoods, and the relief materials were released following joint damage and needs assessments conducted by NEMA, SEMA, and other stakeholders,” Kafindangi said.
He added that the items are not for sale and urged residents to heed early warning messages.
“The food items, non-food items, and building materials were meant to provide immediate support to victims and stabilise their living conditions. I commend the Sokoto State Government and other partners for their collaboration, and I urge residents to heed early warning messages,” he stated.
Responding, Governor Ahmad Aliyu of Sokoto State expressed appreciation to NEMA and the Federal Government for the intervention.
Describing it as a major relief to affected communities,” He noted that the impact of flooding in Sokoto State this year was more severe than in the previous year, and we hope NEMA will continue to support people in distress.
“The governor reaffirmed the State Government’s commitment to partnering with NEMA in strengthening disaster preparedness, response, and resilience across the state,” the statement concluded .
