Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has reacted to the Federal High Court judgment sentencing the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, to life imprisonment, assuring citizens that the development does not signal the end of efforts to secure his release.
In a statement issued on Friday, Governor Otti acknowledged the emotional shock the ruling has caused, especially among residents of Abia and the wider South-East region.
“Without doubt, this development has broken a lot of our people and created an atmosphere of shock and sorrow in Abia and beyond,” he said.
Otti recalled that as far back as 2017, during the military invasion of Kanu’s Afaraukwu home, he condemned the operation and advocated for dialogue as a more effective approach to resolving agitation-related issues.
The governor revealed that he has been engaging federal authorities since December 2023, exploring political and diplomatic channels toward a peaceful resolution. He added that progress had been made and expressed confidence that with the court process now concluded, the agreed political strategy would move forward.
“I’m happy to inform you that I have activated and will continue to work on the already agreed strategy until his freedom is secured,” Otti stated.
He further assured that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration has shown openness to discussions and expressed optimism that the efforts will yield results.
Governor Otti urged residents of Abia and Nigerians at large to remain calm, avoid inflammatory statements, and resist actions capable of escalating tensions or jeopardising diplomatic efforts.
He also cautioned politicians against exploiting the development for divisive or opportunistic political gain.
“I have no doubt that with the assurances I have received from the Federal Government, a resolution is in sight and Mazi Kanu will receive his freedom,” he added.
Otti reaffirmed his commitment to pursuing dialogue, diplomacy and peace-building as the way forward for the South-East and the country.
