Global Websites Hit by Outages as Cloudflare Suffers Service Degradation

A number of major global websites—including social media platform X—experienced significant disruptions on Tuesday due to issues tied to internet infrastructure firm Cloudflare.

Cloudflare confirmed on its service status page that it was investigating “an issue which potentially impacts multiple customers.” The company reported an internal service degradation affecting some of its tools and noted that services may be “intermittently impacted.” Cloudflare added that systems were beginning to recover, though users could still encounter unusually high error rates as remediation continued.

In Nigeria, several leading news outlets—such as ABN—also faced intermittent downtime linked to the disruption.

Cloudflare powers critical backend functions like security screening and traffic management for millions of sites globally, with roughly 20 percent of all websites relying on its infrastructure.

While the full extent of Tuesday’s outage remains uncertain, users also reported trouble accessing other major platforms, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT. OpenAI said it was reviewing the situation but did not directly link the issue to Cloudflare.

This incident follows recent large-scale service disruptions across the tech industry. Just weeks earlier, an Amazon Web Services (AWS) outage took more than 1,000 sites and apps offline, while Microsoft Azure faced service interruptions shortly thereafter.
