A tragic incident has thrown the people of Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State into mourning as a vigilante member reportedly shot and killed his colleague during a burial ceremony.
The suspect, said to be from Umunjanwoke, Orogwe community, allegedly opened fire with his pump-action gun, hitting his colleague identified as Israel Ewuzie, popularly known as “Araka Bullet”, who hailed from Ndegwu in the same council area.
Eyewitnesses said the unfortunate incident occurred during a burial event attended by both vigilante members, causing panic among mourners who fled the scene for safety.
It was not immediately clear what led to the shooting, but sources say the matter has been reported to security authorities for investigation.
Late Ewuzie, described by locals as a committed and fearless vigilante member, was said to have played a key role in maintaining peace and security within the community before his tragic death.
Meanwhile, the suspect has reportedly been taken into custody as police commence a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the killing.
The incident has once again raised concerns over the use and handling of firearms by local security operatives in community assignments and social gatherings.
