Flamingos Crash Out As Ruthless Italy Crush Nigeria 4–0 At U17 Women’s World Cup

Nigeria’s hopes at the ongoing FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup came to a painful end on Tuesday as the Flamingos suffered a 4–0 defeat to an in-form Italian side, who maintained their perfect record in the tournament with four wins from four matches.

The 2022 bronze medallists began brightly, showing intent and determination to progress to the quarterfinals. Captain Shakirat Moshood came close in the 24th minute, but her powerful effort from the left side of the box was brilliantly tipped away by Italian goalkeeper Matilde Robbioni.

Just before halftime, Anna Copelli broke the deadlock for Italy, weaving past Nigeria’s defenders before calmly slotting past goalkeeper Sylvia Echefu.

Nigeria thought they had equalised 10 minutes into the second half through Nguemo Terlumun, who finished off a loose ball after Queen Joseph’s challenge. However, a Video Support Review (VSR) ruled that Joseph had kicked the ball out of Robbioni’s hands, disallowing the goal.

Moments later, Italy doubled their lead through Caterina Venturelli, whose stunning long-range strike sailed over Echefu. Giulia Robino added a third five minutes later, and Rachelle Giudici sealed the win in the 89th minute after a VSR confirmed her goal as legitimate.

The defeat ended Nigeria’s campaign in Morocco, marking a disappointing exit for the Flamingos. The team will now turn their focus to preparations for the qualifying series of next year’s FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup, which is now held annually.
