Group Petitions IGP, NSA, DSS To Investigate Gov. Otti Over Alleged Threats Of Violence

A sociopolitical organization under the banner of the Abia Renaissance Group (ARG) has petitioned the Inspector General of Police (IGP), the National Security Adviser (NSA), and the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), calling for an immediate investigation into what it described as “threats of violence” allegedly issued by the Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti.

In a statement signed by Surv. Kelechi Uwakwe (Chairman) and Comrade Emma Nwangwu (Secretary), the group expressed deep concern over what it termed the governor’s “reckless and inciting utterances,” which they claim have emboldened some of his supporters to intimidate perceived political opponents and ordinary citizens.

The group cited a recent media interaction in which Governor Otti reportedly warned that anyone nursing political ambitions in Abia should “first write his will,” describing the remark as a direct incitement to violence and an abuse of his office as the state’s Chief Security Officer.

“It is worrisome that a sitting governor, whose duty is to protect lives and property, is the one issuing veiled death threats against Abians exercising their democratic rights,” the group alleged.

“This statement confirms long-standing fears that the governor has been tacitly encouraging his supporters to attack or intimidate citizens who hold opposing political views.”

The Abia Renaissance Group further alleged that some of Otti’s supporters have openly threatened to prevent opposition figures from campaigning freely, particularly in Aba, warning that such individuals risk being “stoned or macheted” if they attempt to mobilize politically.

According to the group, these developments have heightened fear and tension across the state, eroding the culture of peace and tolerance for which Abia was once known. They also linked the governor’s “inflammatory tone” to alleged violent scenes witnessed during the last local government elections.

Consequently, ARG urged the NSA, IGP, and DSS to:

Invite Governor Alex Otti for questioning over statements capable of inciting violence;

Investigate cases of intimidation and threats reportedly made by his supporters; and

Guarantee the safety and political freedom of all citizens irrespective of party affiliation.

The group stressed that democracy can only thrive where citizens are free to express their political choices without fear, insisting that no one, “no matter how highly placed”, should be above the law.

“We call on all security agencies to rise to the occasion and ensure that no one, including Governor Otti, undermines the peace and security of Abia State. Abia belongs to all, not to a single man or party,” the statement concluded.

Efforts by ABN TV to obtain a response from the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity regarding the petition proved abortive, as calls and messages sent to his phone were not responded to at the time of filing this report.
