Abia Police Debunks Alleged Killings By Community Vigilantes, Orders Investigation

The Abia State Police Command has refuted claims circulating on Arise TV alleging that local community security watch groups in parts of Aba and Ugwunagbo Local Government Areas killed several young men and adult males with the backing of traditional rulers.

In a statement issued on Thursday, October 16, 2025, and made available to ABN TV, by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka, the Command said no such report of killings had been received at the Command Headquarters, Area Commands, or any Divisional Police Station within the state. It also confirmed that there were no related complaints submitted through its emergency hotlines, Complaint Response Unit, or verified social media channels.

However, the Command has constituted an investigation team led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to probe the alleged incidents. The team has been directed to examine all circumstances surrounding the claims, identify possible perpetrators, and ensure justice is served.

According to the statement, traditional rulers, vigilante commanders, and youth leaders from the affected communities of Umuogele and Iheorji (Aba South LGA) and Nkpaevula (Ugwunagbo LGA) are currently being interrogated by the Police.

Commissioner of Police, CP Danladi Isa, reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to protecting lives and property across Abia State. He noted that the state continues to enjoy relative peace, made possible through the collaborative efforts of the Police, sister security agencies, and the unwavering support of the Abia State Government.
