A paediatrician, Dr. Ayobola Adebowale, popularly known as Your Baby Doctor, has explained that it is not unusual for some newborn baby girls to experience light bleeding shortly after birth — a condition medically referred to as pseudo menstruation or neonatal menstruation.
In a video obtained by our correspondent on Saturday, Dr. Adebowale stated that the occurrence is triggered by hormonal changes following delivery and is typically harmless.
She said, “Your newborn baby can actually menstruate, and this is what we call pseudo menstruation or neonatal menstruation. It happens because, while in the womb, your baby is exposed to a lot of your maternal hormones.

“When the baby is delivered, there’s a sudden withdrawal of those hormones, which may cause what we call withdrawal bleeding — essentially a form of menstruation in newborn babies. It’s a normal and temporary condition that usually resolves on its own.”
Dr. Adebowale further advised parents not to panic if they notice mild bleeding in their newborn girls within the first few days of life, emphasizing that it is a natural response to hormonal withdrawal and requires no medical intervention unless the bleeding is excessive or prolonged.
