The ancient community of Ebem Ohafia in Abia State came alive with vibrant colours, drumming, and traditional performances as indigenes and visitors celebrated the Native Doctors’ Day Festival (Afor Nde Dibia) — a major highlight of the annual Iri Ji (New Yam) Festival, ABN TV reports.

The festival, which began on Sunday, September 28, and climaxed on Monday, September 29, 2025, featured spectacular displays of spiritual art, ancestral rituals, and traditional music that reflected the rich heritage of the Ohafia people.
According to tradition, the celebration began at Nde Inyima, Eziukwu, the historical birthplace of native healing in Ebem, where all native doctors performed their early morning rites. They later processed through the three sections of Ebem — Eziukwu, Ekeluogo, and Ngbaga — visiting shrines and the market square before converging at Eziukwu Village Square for the grand finale.
During the event, native doctors from different parts of Ohafia showcased their spiritual powers in front of a large crowd. One of the most captivating moments was when a native doctor reportedly turned a pot of sand into rice, beans, and yam, drawing loud cheers from onlookers.
The festival also included initiation rites for individuals interested in joining the traditional healing vocation, symbolizing renewal and continuity of ancestral heritage.
Cultural enthusiasts described the event as a rare demonstration of faith, culture, and unity. It also served as a reminder of the community’s enduring respect for its traditions and spiritual roots.

The Native Doctors’ Day remains one of the most anticipated cultural events in Ohafia, blending mystery, performance, and spirituality while strengthening the bond among Ebem’s three sections.
