Customs, Defence Bureau Test Indigenous Airboat To Boost Maritime Security

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), in collaboration with the Defence Research and Development Bureau (DRDB), has successfully tested a locally developed airboat at Jabi Lake, Abuja, as part of efforts to strengthen maritime security and intensify anti-smuggling operations.

The innovative vessel, built to navigate shallow and hard-to-reach waterways, was inspected and test-run by officers from both agencies. Experts at the demonstration highlighted its unique capabilities, describing it as a strategic addition to Nigeria’s security toolkit.

Comptroller Haniel Haddison, who heads Special Duties at the NCS Headquarters, described the development as a milestone in indigenous technology, underscoring its role in enhancing anti-smuggling operations and capacity building.

“This is a welcome idea for the Nigeria Customs Service, and we commend the efforts of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, for ensuring value addition to our equipment,” Haddison said. “It reflects the Comptroller-General’s commitment to synergy and collaboration with sister agencies, particularly in capacity development. This will strengthen the competence and capability of the Nigeria Customs Service.”

Rear Admiral Suleiman El-Ladan, Director of Maritime Research and Development at DRDB, stressed the importance of inter-agency partnerships in safeguarding the nation’s waterways, noting that such collaborations are critical in addressing evolving security challenges.

The event concluded with the Director General of the DRDB presenting souvenirs to two senior Customs officers in recognition of their active participation and commitment.
