The Nigerian U-20 national team, the Flying Eagles, have commenced their final phase of preparations for the upcoming FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile at the NFF/FIFA Goal Project in Abuja.
Head coach Aliyu Zubairu is overseeing the team’s readiness as they enter the most critical stage of their three-phase training regimen.
Speaking to the press, Zubairu expressed optimism about the preparations, stating that they are “at top gear now.” He revealed that the squad features a blend of local players from within Nigeria and international-based players.
“We have invited some players from abroad, Nigerian players abroad, some from within the country,” Zubairu confirmed.
“Even though the majority of those we invited from abroad have still not been allowed by their clubs to come, but we are pushing with the ones on ground to make sure that we are heading towards having a very formidable and solid team for Nigeria U-20.”
A key focus during the camp has been David Stockbrink, the promising player from Fortuna Sittard in the Netherlands. Stockbrink had previously been invited to the African Cup of Nations but was sidelined due to an injury.
“We are still looking at him,” Zubairu said of Stockbrink.
