GMO Foods Pose No Harm To Us – NAFDAC DG

The Director General of Nigeria’s National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, stated that genetically modified foods (GMOs) are not inherently harmful to human health, as long as they meet established safety standards.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television on Thursday, Adeyeye addressed the ongoing public discussion about the consumption and regulation of GMO products in Nigeria.

She clarified, “GMOs, when it comes to food, are not bad for us. Their safety depends on the type of food and whether proper safety assessments have been conducted.”

She explained that the National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA) oversees the safety of GMO products, while NAFDAC works closely with the agency to certify their quality.

“We have a memorandum of understanding with NBMA. They ensure that GMO foods are safe, of good quality, and effective. Without their certification, NAFDAC cannot approve these products,” she said.

Describing herself as a “food freak”, Adeyeye highlighted the importance of checking food labels for GMO content and reassured Nigerians that all approved products undergo rigorous safety evaluations.

“Our mission at NAFDAC is to ensure that all food in the market is safe, of high quality, and effective,” she emphasized.

Her remarks come amid ongoing debates in Nigeria about GMO food safety and labelling, with supporters advocating for transparency and critics expressing health concerns.
