Peter Obi Defends One-Term Pledge, Dismisses Criticism As Misguided

Presidential hopeful Peter Obi has reaffirmed his commitment to serve only a single four-year term if elected in 2027, dismissing critics who have described the vow as desperate or unrealistic.

In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, the former Anambra State governor explained that his promise is rooted in a genuine desire to rebuild Nigeria, not personal ambition.

“I find it baffling that my decision to serve a single four-year term, if elected, is causing so much agitation. This suggests we doubt that a sincere leader can accomplish meaningful change in 48 months,” Obi wrote.

Responding to claims of desperation, Obi rejected the characterization, saying he has never pursued power with desperation or engaged in the typical tactics of desperate politicians.

“There are certain behaviors that mark desperation—aggressive rhetoric, defensiveness, unrealistic promises, personal attacks, or flip-flopping on policies. None of these describe my political conduct,” he stated.

Obi emphasized that his political philosophy prioritizes principle over power and civility over conflict.

“Throughout my political career, I’ve never been involved in thuggery, ballot snatching, or electoral malpractice. Anyone can investigate—I’ve never been associated with rigging or violence,” he asserted.

The 2023 Labour Party candidate insisted that his one-term pledge is both sincere and feasible. He argued that four years is enough to implement transformative reforms, particularly in fighting corruption and redirecting national resources to key sectors like education, healthcare, and infrastructure.

“For example, the trillions spent on new presidential jets and other unnecessary expenditures could have been better invested in national development,” Obi said.

He added that his administration would prioritize the rule of law and strengthen democratic institutions: “In four years, we can ensure adherence to the rule of law and conduct free, fair, and credible elections.”

Obi concluded that leadership, for him, is about impact—not entitlement or personal gain.

His one-term pledge has become a major talking point in the lead-up to the 2027 elections, drawing both praise and skepticism across the political spectrum.
