President Bola Tinubu has commended Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, for their outstanding performance at the 2025 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket as they gear up to face Mali in Sunday’s final.
D’Tigress secured their place in the championship game after a hard-fought 75-68 victory over Senegal in the semi-final on Saturday at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan. The win puts Nigeria within reach of a historic milestone—becoming the first nation to clinch five consecutive Women’s Afrobasket titles.
In a statement issued ahead of the final, President Tinubu lauded the team’s dedication, unity, and representation of the country on the international stage.
“I salute the incredible discipline, focus, and team spirit of D’Tigress at this year’s Afrobasket tournament,” the president said.
“They have not only flown our flag with pride but have also earned global respect for Nigerian excellence—both players and officials alike.”
He also singled out Head Coach Rena Wakama for praise, acknowledging her groundbreaking role as the first woman to lead the national team.
“A special commendation goes to Coach Rena Wakama, our first female head coach. Her leadership and experience—both as a former player and now from the sidelines—have been instrumental in inspiring D’Tigress to reach new heights,” he stated.
As Nigeria prepares for the decisive showdown against Mali, Tinubu expressed his full confidence in the team’s ability to retain their title.
“The entire nation is behind you as you pursue a fifth straight championship. #MissionV,” he said.
The final promises to be a thrilling contest, as D’Tigress aim to solidify their legacy as the dominant force in African women’s basketball.
