The apex Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has raised concerns over President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s decision to extend the tenure of Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service.
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Dr. Ezechi Chukwu, the organization warned that the extension could stall the career progression of Deputy Comptroller General (DCG) BU Nwafor, an officer from Anambra State who is next in line for the top post.
Ohanaeze described the move as a setback to equity and inclusion, stressing the importance of regional balance in key national appointments.
“We are concerned that extending CG Adeniyi’s tenure may jeopardize the anticipated promotion of DCG BU Nwafor, who is due for retirement in October 2026. This raises doubts about her chances of eventually leading the service,” the statement noted.
The group urged the president to uphold the federal character principle as outlined in the Nigerian Constitution and to ensure fair representation across all regions.
Ohanaeze called on President Tinubu to reconsider the decision in the spirit of justice, inclusivity, and national unity.
