The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has established a Forward Operational Base (FOB) in Akwa Ibom State to strengthen its presence and operational effectiveness in the South-South region.
According to a statement released Friday in Abuja by NAF’s Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the new base is part of efforts to boost air power projection and maritime security, particularly along the Gulf of Guinea corridor.
The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, revealed the development during a courtesy visit to Governor Umo Eno in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital.
Abubakar commended the state government for donating land for the project, describing the contribution as a significant step forward in enhancing the country’s national security infrastructure.
“The base will further assure the safety and security of persons and property and foster Akwa Ibom as a destination for investment and tourism,” he said.
He also highlighted the broader impact of the FOB beyond military operations, noting its potential to stimulate civil commerce, investment, and tourism in the region.
Reaffirming NAF’s dedication to protecting lives and property, Abubakar stated that the new base would complement existing security structures and enhance investor confidence.
In his response, Governor Eno welcomed the initiative and emphasized Akwa Ibom’s increasing strategic importance in Nigeria’s national security landscape.
“We believe that a safe and secure society is the bedrock of development, and we are glad to partner with the NAF to achieve that objective,” he said.
He also pledged the state’s continued support for the Air Force, noting that security remains central to sustainable development.
