President Bola Tinubu has approved a one-year extension of the tenure of the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi.
Adeniyi, who was initially due to retire on August 31, 2025, will now remain in office until August 2026.
The announcement was made in a statement signed by the president’s special adviser on information and strategy, Bayo Onanuga. According to the statement, the extension is intended to give Adeniyi more time to consolidate ongoing reforms and complete critical initiatives under the Tinubu administration.
These initiatives include the modernization of the Nigeria Customs Service, the implementation of the National Single Window Project, and meeting Nigeria’s commitments under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) protocol.
“President Tinubu recognizes Mr. Adeniyi’s steadfast leadership and commitment to service.
“The President is confident that this extension will further strengthen the Nigeria Customs Service in achieving its strategic mandate of trade facilitation, revenue generation, and border security,” the statement read.
Adeniyi was appointed as the Comptroller-General of Customs in October 2023, after initially serving in an acting capacity from June 2023, following the retirement of former CG Hameed Ali.
