Ten-time African champions the Super Falcons hit the streets of Lagos on Wednesday for a trophy parade after winning the 2024 WAFCON in Morocco, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
Still basking in the euphoria of the presidential honour and cash rewards, the team arrived in Lagos on Wednesday afternoon and embarked on a trophy parade across major points on Lagos Island.
The parade began at Costain through Eko Bridge, Apogbon, Obalende, Ikoyi Road, Victoria Island, before terminating around Eko Hotel.
The team was greeted by a handful of fans at different points.
The team arrived in Abuja, the country’s capital, on Monday, where they were treated to a presidential reception by President Bola Tinubu.
Each player got a cash reward of $100,000 while every member of the 11-man technical crew were also given $50,000 as well as three-bedroom apartments and a national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger.
The Super Falcons sealed a record-extending 10th title last Saturday after recovering from two goals down to beat hosts Morocco 3-2 in the final, thanks to second half goals from Esther Okoronkwo, Folashade Ijamilusi and Jennifer Echegini.
En route to the final, the Falcons secured top spot in their group at the tournament with seven points without conceding a goal, before cruising past Zambia 5-0 in the quarter-finals.
It took a late goal from Michelle Alozie to secure a 2-1 win over South Africa in the semi-finals, while the team weathered the storm against the hosts in the final, thanks to Okoronkwo’s inspiring display.
The Super Falcons also dominated the tournament’s awards as captain Rasheedat Ajibade won the Player of The Tournament; Chiamaka Nnadozie was named the best keeper, while coach Justine Madugu won the best coach award.
The thrilling dominance marked the 10th triumph of the Falcons on the continental stage after their previous triumphs in 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2010, 2014, 2016 and 2018.
