The Super Falcons of Nigeria have arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, following their triumphant outing in Morocco, where they secured their 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title.
The team landed at exactly 2:26 p.m. on Monday aboard a chartered flight and were warmly received by jubilant fans and top government officials. Among those present were the Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris; the Minister of Culture and Tourism, Hanatu Musawa; and the Minister for Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim.
Celebrations are set to continue in the capital, with the team expected to parade the WAFCON trophy through the streets of Abuja in an open-top bus, culminating in a reception at the Presidential Villa with President Bola Tinubu.
The Falcons’ victory on Saturday was nothing short of historic. In a thrilling final against host nation Morocco, Nigeria came from two goals down to claim a dramatic 3–2 win. Morocco had taken a commanding 2–0 lead by halftime through goals from Ghizlane Chebbak and Mssoudy.
However, the second half saw a remarkable comeback. Esther Okoronkwo began the fightback in the 63rd minute, converting a penalty after a Moroccan handball. Just eight minutes later, she turned provider, assisting Ijamilusi for the equalizer. In the 88th minute, Jennifer Echegini sealed the win by slotting home from a well-delivered free kick.
With this win, Nigeria preserves its flawless record in WAFCON finals—10 titles from 10 appearances—further solidifying the Super Falcons’ status as the most dominant force in African women’s football.
