At least five youths have been arrested for engaging in illegal mining at Salihawa Village, located within Rinji Ward in the Gwarzo Local Government Area of Kano State, despite an official ban on all mining activities in the region.
The arrests were made following a directive issued by the Chairman of Gwarzo Local Government, Dr. Mani Tsoho, who prohibited mining in the area due to rising security concerns.
According to a statement from the Zonal Information Officer, Auwalu Musa Yola, the operation was carried out by operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
The NSCDC team, led by Commandant CSC Aminu Muhammad Hildu, arrested the suspects and handed them over to Dr. Tsoho at his office on Monday.
Expressing his disappointment, the chairman criticized the youths for defying the ban, noting that the local government had widely publicized the prohibition through various platforms, including radio broadcasts and mosque announcements during Friday prayers.
Dr. Tsoho praised the NSCDC for their swift response and professionalism in enforcing the directive. He further instructed that the arrested individuals be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
