Sowore, Activists Lead Retired Police Officers’ Protest In Abuja

Omoyele Sowore, the African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, alongside other activists, is currently leading a protest by retired police officers in Abuja.

DAILY POST reports that the protest is aimed at demanding better welfare for personnel of the Nigeria Police Force.

Members of the Nigerian Union of Retired Police Officers had earlier announced plans to picket the National Assembly complex and later move to the Force Headquarters. Their primary demand is to be removed from the contributory pension scheme, which they have openly criticized.

They described the pension scheme as “discriminatory,” adding that “their members have been dying” as a result of the current system.

However, the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) has cautioned against the protest and urged the disgruntled retirees to return to the negotiation table.

According to PCRC, the protest is “an attempt to discredit the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the administration of President Bola Tinubu.”
