The remains of former President Muhammadu Buhari arrived at the Umar Musa Yar’adua Airport in Katsina State on Tuesday, where they were received with full military honors.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu led a high-profile delegation that welcomed the late president’s body, which was flown into Nigeria aboard a Nigerian Air Force aircraft. The reception was attended by governors, ministers, members of the National Assembly, and other top government officials.
Buhari’s body was transported from London, United Kingdom, to his hometown of Daura in Katsina State, ahead of a state burial ceremony in his honour.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, confirmed the arrangements during a press briefing on Monday in Abuja. He announced that President Tinubu would personally receive Buhari’s remains in Katsina, followed by a brief military ceremony at the airport before the body is moved to Daura.
The Jana’iza (Islamic funeral prayer) and interment are scheduled to take place at the late president’s residence in Daura.
As part of national mourning, President Tinubu has ordered that condolence registers be opened at all federal ministries, departments, and agencies, as well as at Nigerian embassies and missions worldwide. An additional condolence register has been set up at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja.
Idris also noted that world leaders have continued to send in condolences, reflecting the global respect and legacy of President Buhari.
To ensure a dignified and coordinated farewell, President Tinubu has established an inter-ministerial committee, chaired by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume. The committee will work in collaboration with the Katsina State Government and the Buhari family.
Furthermore, 25 members of the Federal Executive Council have been directed to attend the burial ceremonies in Katsina and remain in Daura for the third-day prayers scheduled for Wednesday.
